Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (probably) was the most famous anti-Apartheid-fighter in South Africa. After being in prison for about 27 years for working for the ANC, the African National Congress, he became the first black president of South Africa. Instead of hating the whites for discriminating him as a black person, he wanted to bring reconciliation to his country.

Mandela was born in 1918 in Qunu, Eastern Cape. After school he began to study the law at Fort Hare University. For having a conflict with the dean he was banned.
In spite of this, he became a lawyer. Furthermore, he joined the ANC, which was forbidden in 1964, which is why he had to go to prison for 27 years. After coming out of prison he continued his peaceful fight against Apartheid for which he got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 1994 he was elected as first black president of South Africa.

Text 3:

Nelson Mandela: A legend has died

Nelson Mandela was one of the most important people in the history of Africa.
Because of him conflicts didn´t end in civil war but in equality.

Even today he is an icon for peace and equal rights.

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in Qunu, Eastern Cape. He received a good education and became a lawyer, which was very unusual for a black man in South Africa. Like every black man he was aware of ongoing discrimination and decided to fight against it. So in 1944 he joined the ANC and became a leading person in it. Because of that he got several bans and after the ANC was banned by the government he had to go underground. Before he could start his work as a leader of the military wing of the ANC he was arrested and imprisoned for 27 years.

Most of the years from 1964 to 1990 he spent on Robben Island and had to do heavy work.  In 1990 continued the movement against Apartheid. He negotiated with the government for over 3 years about a peaceful transfer. Because of his life´s work he was awarded the Nobel Prize of Peace in 1993. In 1994 he was chosen as the head of state. So he was the first black president of South Africa. After three years as president he stepped back, because he was too old.

At 5th of December 2013 he died because of a serious illness at the age of 95.
