Amerikanische Studierende bereichern das Hansa
Im Rahmen des Austauschprogrammes „Global Gateways“ der Universität Hamburg und der Indiana University (Bloomington), USA für angehende LehrerInnen hatten wir von Anfang April bis Mitte Juni 2026 auch dieses Schuljahr wieder zwei amerikanische Praktikanten am Hansa. Seth Weisenbach und Wesley Kopis verbrachten jeweils 9 Wochen bei uns und berichteten selbst wie folgt von Ihren Eindrücken und Erlebnissen am Hansa, in Hamburg und in Deutschland als Ganzes…
„Ich heiße Seth und bin Austauschlehrer aus den USA. Ich habe dort Deutsch und Englisch als Fremdsprache studiert. Ich bin gerade hier in Deutschland, weil ich am Austauschprogramm “Global Gateways” teilnehme. Global Gateways ist ein fantastisches Austauschprogramm, in dem man fast überall auf der Welt hinreisen und unterrichten kann. Das Programm dauert für uns nur neun Wochen. Ich habe Deutschland gewählt, weil ich Deutschlehrer werden möchte, und ich war noch nicht in Norddeutschland. Ich habe in den Englisch-, Geografie- und Biologiekursen der Klassenstufen 5-11 unterrichtet. Meine Zeit am Hansa-Gymnasium war richtig toll. Ich habe viel von meinen MentorlehrerInnen gelernt, z.B. in den Themen Unterrichtskontrolle und Unterrichtsplanung. Meine MentorInnen hatten unterschiedliche Ideen und Philosophien und das war toll anzusehen. Durch Beobachtung und Übung konnte ich mir ein besseres Bild machen, wer ich als Lehrer bin. Diese Erfahrungen gaben mir die notwendigen Informationen, die ich nutzen kann, um ein besserer Lehrer zu werden.“

“Hello! I am Wesley Kopis. I’m 26 years old and I’m from Bloomington, Indiana. I study at Indiana University, and my degree is Social Studies Education. Through IU we have a program known as Global Gateway for Teachers. This program allows students to spend 9 weeks abroad in schools around the world, and makes it extremely affordable as well.
For me, this experience is incredibly valuable as a future history and social studies teacher. It is important to understand the world beyond our own borders in order to help build a sense of empathy around the globe, and of course bringing that experience to students in your classroom.
Speaking more personally, this was my very first time leaving the US, so while I was quite nervous, I understood the importance of an experience like this.
At Hansa, I bounced from class to class, year to year, and I’m mostly just a sponge. I tried to learn as much as I could from my teacher mentors in terms of the methods they use in class and how they structure lessons. At this school, it is not hard to walk out of a lesson learning something new, the teachers here really do incredible work. I also got a few opportunities to design lessons, putting what I learned into practice.
All-in-all, my time here at Hansa and in Germany have been life-changing. While it was a roller-coaster ride going through a wide range of emotions while adjusting to a new country, I can really say that I have grown into someone who embraces being out of their comfort zone. Because, no matter where you are in the world, teachers ultimately love the work they do, and care deeply about their students. With that in mind, it really gets me comfortable and ready to learn alongside the faculty here!”
