Calgary trifft Hansa

My name is Cindy Ma, and I am a student teacher from the University of Calgary in Canada.
This year, I had the privilege of spending two months in the Teaching Across Borders program,
which allowed me to immerse myself not only in Hansa Gymnasium, but also in a new country
with a rich and vibrant culture.
At Hansa, I observed a wide range of classes, teachers, subjects, and grade levels, which gave
me a holistic understanding of the school’s teaching practices and community. I often reflected
on my experiences here in comparison with my teaching practicums in Canada, recognizing
both meaningful similarities and insightful differences that I will carry forward into my future
career.
From the beginning, the staff at Hansa were warm and welcoming; always greeting me in the
mornings and making me feel at home in their classrooms. My partner teacher, Lisa Klein, was
especially supportive. She guided me through the school, shared valuable knowledge about the
education system, and modeled her teaching philosophy with generosity and openness. I was
given the opportunity to teach a few creative lessons to her Year Eight English students, with
helpful guidance beforehand and thoughtful feedback afterward. I deeply appreciated her trust,
wisdom, and encouragement.
I was also excited to learn that Hansa offered IB courses. As a former IB student myself, I felt I
could offer unique insight and genuinely support students navigating that experience. The
students, just like the staff, were respectful, curious, and kind, making my time here incredibly
rewarding. My experience at Hansa is one I will cherish for many years. Everything I learned,
observed, and felt during my time here will shape me into a better teacher, and I will carry it with
me wherever I go.
